Box Score 2 Mary Baldwin split its season-opening doubleheader Saturday against Marymount University, falling 9–6 in the opener before responding with a 9–2 victory in game two.
Game 1 — Marymount 9, Mary Baldwin 6
Mary Baldwin's offense erupted early, plating six runs in the top of the second inning to take a 6–1 lead. The rally featured RBI hits from seniors,
Isiah Brooks,
Micahel Muller,
Jacob Barber, and freshman
Patrick Sido, along with an RBI groundout from junior
Grayson Moore.
Marymount chipped away with two runs in the bottom of the second and completed the comeback with a three-run fifth to tie the game at 6–6. The hosts then pulled ahead in the sixth, using a three-RBI double to take a 9–6 lead they would not relinquish.
Brooks finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk, while Muller drove in two runs. Sido added two hits and an RBI. Junior
Lance Gowans allowed three runs (two earned) over four innings in the start, while sophomore
Adam Pitts took the loss in relief.
Game 2 — Mary Baldwin 9, Marymount 2
Mary Baldwin bounced back in the second game, piling up 15 hits and breaking things open with a three-run sixth inning.
After the teams traded runs in the first, Mary Baldwin moved ahead for good in the third on a two-run double by Sido. The lead grew to 4–1 in the fourth on an RBI single from Brooks before Marymount briefly cut the margin to 4–2 in the fifth.
Mary Baldwin answered decisively in the sixth, scoring three times on run-scoring hits from Moore, Brooks, and Muller. Brooks added another RBI single in the seventh, and Sido capped the scoring with a solo home run in the eighth.
Brooks led the offense with a 4-for-6 performance and three RBIs, while Sido went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, including a homer and a double.
Muller collected two hits and an RBI, and sophomore
Conner Michael added two hits and scored twice.
Junior
Connor Smith earned the win, allowing just one hit and two runs over five innings. The bullpen combined for four hitless innings to secure the victory.
Mary Baldwin finishes the day with a split and will look to carry the momentum from the game-two win into their match against Eastern Mennonite University Wednesday, February 18 at 3:00 p.m.
