Box Score 2 STAUNTON, VA - The Mary Baldwin College softball team swept the University of Maine - Presque Isle this afternoon in very windy conditions. The Fighting Squirrels took the first game 12-3 and the final game 8-0. Both games ended in just five innings.
In the first game, the Owls jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning before the Fighting Squirrels seattled down and began chipping away at the lead.
In the bottom of the second inning with 2 outs, Pattie Pleasants started Mary Baldwin off when she doubled to center field.
Kayla Wheeler then stepped to the plate and tripled scoring Pleasants. The second run of the inning came after Sarah Seekins singled Kayla Wheeler scored on a passed ball.
Trailing 2-3, Mary Baldwin then took the lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Olivia Compton hit a sacrifice fly to center field driving Jonquil Brown home. Then, Pattie Pleasants singled to left field and drove home Jaclyn Lamoy who had doubled down the left field line to get on base.
Mary Baldwin continued to hold the Owls scoreless and broke the game open in the bottom of the 4th inning. Seekins walked then stole second base to put herself into scoring position. Montana Welcher stepped up and singled up the middle bringing Seekins home. Jonquil Brown then homered driving Welcher home.
Olivia Compton, Breanna Rodriguez-Jeff, and Kristen Anderson also added singles and Kayla Wheeler added a triple as Mary Baldwin finished with 8 runs in the inning on the way to a 12-3 win.
Kayla Wheeler finished with 2 hits, 2 runs and 4 RBI's. Jonquil Brown added 2 runs, 2 hits, and 2 RBI's.
In the second game, it was Mary Baldwin who jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Sarah Seekins started the Fighting Squirrels off with a single to left field. Kristen Anderson followed with a double. Montana Welcher then singled driving Seekins home. Olivia Compton also added a hit and Mary Baldwin took the early lead.
With a solid defense, Mary Baldwin held the Owls scoreless and slowly built their lead. The Fighting Squirrels added one run in the second inning and another in the third when Olivia Compton hit a home run.
The home team added two more runs in the bottom of the 4th inning.
Needing just one run, Kayla Wheeler tripled in bottom of the 5th inning driving Hannah Borgemenke across the plate to take the 8-0 win with just one out.
Olivia Compton finished with 1 run, 2 hits, and 2 RBI's.
Mary Baldwin College (5-19) get back to their USA South Conference schedule on Friday when they travel to Greensboro College.
