Hearns Wins Triple Jump Gold Medal to Lead MBUTrack & Field Teams At The First USA South Indoor Championship

Grace Hearns led the Mary Baldwin women's team with a gold medal in the triple jump while Din Rayche and Leslie Green Jr. earned medals for the men's team in the first USA South Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The women's team placed sixth out of seven teams with 21 points while the men's team was fifth out of six teams with 29.5 points - just a half point behind fourth-place N.C. Wesleyan.  Southern Virginia won both team titles.

Hearns won the triple jump with a conference record 10.46 meter performance.  She also scored points with a pair of fifth-place finishes in the long jump (4.22m) and the 60-meter hurdles (10.20).  Kaitlin Bower scored twice individually for the Fighting Squirrels with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump (9.24m) and a fifth-place finish in the long jump (4.44m).  MBU also posted a fifth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay.

On the men's side, Rayche earned a silver medal in the triple jump (12.67m) and Green captured bronze in the long jump (6.15m). Both Rayche and Green combined with Tristen Bannasch and Brendan Plogger for a fifth-place finish in the 4x400 relay (3.58.33).

Rayche also picked up points in the 60 hurdles (10.00, fourth place), a tie for fifth in the high jump 1.75m and a sixth place finish in the long jump (5.80m).  Jameel Vann also hit the scoreboard with a sixth-place finish in the 200-meter dash (23.80).  

The Fighting Squirrels also picked up fifth-place points by Caleb Smith in the 5,000-meter run (16:52.16) and the distance medley relay team of Daniel Diaczyszyn, Calvin Crumbley, Plogger and Micah Ahearn-Wood (12:18.88).
