Rebecca ("Becca") Laing Bower played volleyball at Mary Baldwin in the "three-set era", but still ranks among the school's top players in kills, service aces and digs.  In fact, she is the only player prior to the turn of the 21st century to still be ranked among MBU leaders in career kills (623), service aces (144) and digs (1,205).

Laing Bower was named to the Atlantic Women's Collegiate Conference (AWCC) all-star team in each of her four years.  She led Mary Baldwin to second-place finishes in the conference three times and helped the squad win the AWCC championship in 1995.

She helped the softball team in its club team stage during her final years at MBU, playing several positions to help the program in its infancy.
Her first job after graduating from MBU was in the public relations department of the St. Louis (NFL) Rams, which led to a fundraising position with Special Olympics Missouri.

Laing Bower went on to coach volleyball and softball, starting at what is now Staunton High School and Stuart Hall for more than a decade.  She also coached several volleyball travel teams in the Augusta County area while serving as the Dean of Students at Stuart Hall.

Laing Bower was named the 1997-98 Mary Baldwin Women's Athlete of the Year and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Communications.  She has a daughter Madison Cunningham, son-in-law Mason, grandson Avery and close friend Scott Hurd, who are all in attendance today.
