STAUNTON, VA - Mary Baldwin College opened its 2012 USA South Conference schedule this afternoon hosting No. 25 Shenandoah University.  The Hornets (11-3, 2-0 USAS) took both games dominating the first game 12-1 then coming from behind in the second 8-3.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first two innings of the opening game.  The Hornets drove in three runs in the top of the 3rd to take the lead and added 5 more runs in the 4th before rolling to a 12-1 win.  Jordan Wolford finished with 2 hits, 2 runs and 2 RBI's.

Mary Baldwin's run came in the 4th inning when Freshman LaToya Diggs scored a base hit. Senior Courtney Clausi followed with a double deep into centerfield to bring Diggs home.

Junior Jessica Hogle was on the mound for the Fighting Squirrels giving up 17 hits, 12 runs, 6 earned runs, and 1 walk.  

The final game of the afternoon looked quite different as MBC was the first to score.  Both lead-off batter LaToya Diggs and Courtney Clausi got to base by Hornet errors.  A bunt by Jonquil Brown then brought LaToya Diggs home to give MBC a 1-0 lead.

Both teams were then held scoreless in the next three innings before Ashley Crawford and Denise Mitchell gave Shenandoah the lead 2-1 in the 5th inning.

In the 6th inning with 2 outs, Shenandoah added 5 runs to give them the insurance they needed for the win.

The Fighting Squirrels took advantage of their final at bat.  Sophomore Tiffany Flesher started MBC with a basehit.  After striking out Lindsey Shifflet, LaToya Diggs got on base due to a fielder's choice.  Senior Courtney Clausi then hit her first homerun of the year to bring Diggs home.  The Hornets then got the final out and took their second conference win.

Amanda Miller pitched the second game for Mary Baldwin giving up 12 hits, 8 runs, 5 earned runs, and 2 walks.

The Fighting Squirrels will host Methodist University this Saturday for their second USA South Doubleheader.  The first game starts at 1:00PM.
