Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

STAUNTON, VA - Mary Baldwin softball fell to 0-4 this afternoon in the USA South Athletic Conference when they lost two games to Methodist University.  In the first game, Methodist defeated MBC 10-1. In the final game of the afternoon, the Monarchs outlasted Mary Baldwin 13-8.

The Fighting Squirrels struggled offensively in the opening game getting only 2 hits with the only run scored in the 5th inning when Sabrina Desper hit a double.  After advancing to 3rd, she came home on a wild pitch.

The Monarchs slowly built their lead throughout the game finishing with 15 hits and 5 RBI's. Starting pitcher Jessica Hogle gave up 15 hits, 10 runs, 7 earned runs, and 4 walks.

In the second game, Mary Baldwin took the lead in the first inning when Senior Courtney Clausi and Freshman Virginia Griffin scored.  Methodist came back in the 2nd and 3rd innings to build a 5-2 lead.  The Monarchs added one run in the 5th then two more in the 6th with the help of three stolen bases to gain an 8-2 lead.

In the bottom of the 6th inning, the Fighting Squirrels found the offense they had been looking for all day.  Sabrina Desper started the inning with a double deep into the outfield.  Kelsey Still's patience paid off when she received her third walk of the game.  After a couple of outs, Freshman LaToya Diggs hit her second home run of the season bringing in both Desper and Still.  Mary Baldwin now trailed 5-8.

Methodist answered in the top of the 7th inning with 5 more runs giving the visitors a 13-5 lead.

With one final at bat, Ginny Griffin hit a double into centerfield.  Then, with only one out remaining, Senior Sabrina Desper brought Griffin in with her second base hit of the game.  Sophomore Jill Palomo answered with a double and the Squirrels were building momentum.  Junior Kelsey Still's base hit that brought Desper and Palomo home proved to be the final of the game as The Squirrels fell 8-13.

Mary Baldwin finished with 8 hits, 8 runs, and 8 RBI's while Methodist had 14 hits, 13 runs, and 10 RBI's.

The Fighting Squirrels will have little time to rest as they host William Peace Sunday afternoon at 1:00PM.
