Box Score 2 STAUNTON, VA - Mary Baldwin softball fell to 0-4 this afternoon
in the USA South Athletic Conference when they lost two games to
Methodist University. In the first game, Methodist defeated
MBC 10-1. In the final game of the afternoon, the Monarchs
outlasted Mary Baldwin 13-8.
The Fighting Squirrels struggled offensively in the opening game
getting only 2 hits with the only run scored in the 5th inning when
Sabrina Desper hit a double. After advancing to 3rd, she came
home on a wild pitch.
The Monarchs slowly built their lead throughout the game
finishing with 15 hits and 5 RBI's. Starting pitcher Jessica Hogle
gave up 15 hits, 10 runs, 7 earned runs, and 4 walks.
In the second game, Mary Baldwin took the lead in the first
inning when Senior Courtney Clausi and Freshman Virginia Griffin
scored. Methodist came back in the 2nd and 3rd innings to
build a 5-2 lead. The Monarchs added one run in the 5th then
two more in the 6th with the help of three stolen bases to gain an
8-2 lead.
In the bottom of the 6th inning, the Fighting Squirrels found
the offense they had been looking for all day. Sabrina Desper
started the inning with a double deep into the outfield.
Kelsey Still's patience paid off when she received her third
walk of the game. After a couple of outs, Freshman LaToya
Diggs hit her second home run of the season bringing in both Desper
and Still. Mary Baldwin now trailed 5-8.
Methodist answered in the top of the 7th inning with 5 more runs
giving the visitors a 13-5 lead.
With one final at bat, Ginny Griffin hit a double into
centerfield. Then, with only one out remaining, Senior
Sabrina Desper brought Griffin in with her second base hit of the
game. Sophomore Jill Palomo answered with a double and the
Squirrels were building momentum. Junior Kelsey Still's base
hit that brought Desper and Palomo home proved to be the final of
the game as The Squirrels fell 8-13.
Mary Baldwin finished with 8 hits, 8 runs, and 8 RBI's while
Methodist had 14 hits, 13 runs, and 10 RBI's.
The Fighting Squirrels will have little time to rest as they
host William Peace Sunday afternoon at 1:00PM.
