MBC Softball Lose Two Non-Conference Matchups

The Mary Baldwin College softball team played on the road this week against two non-conference matchups.  Eastern Mennonite University defeated Mary Baldwin College 10-1 (five innings) and 9-1 (six innings) on Wednesday then the University of Mary Washington took two wins on Thursday 8-0 (six innings) and 11-0 (five innings).

After taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Royals took a decisive lead in the 2nd inning scoring 5 runs as they rolled to a 10-1 win over the Fighting Squirrels in game 1.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first two innings of game 2 against Eastern Mennonite University.  In the bottom of the 3rd inning, the home team scored when Courtney Allman doubled to bring home 2 RBI's.  Later in the inning, Nicole Smith gave the Royals a 3-0 lead when she crossed home plate on a passed ball.

In the top of the 4th inning, Lindsey Shifflett doubled to bring home Jonquil Brown putting the Fighting Squirrels to within 2.  

EMU added 4 runs in the 5th inning and two more in the 6th to take the nightcap 9-1 in six innings.

With the wins, Eastern Mennonite improves their record to 9-5 while MBC falls to 0-12.

On Thursday, Mary Baldwin was on the road again to face The University of Mary Washington.

In the opening game, Mary Washington's Hannah Otterman struck out a career-high 13 batters in six innings to boast the home team past Mary Baldwin 8-0.

The game looked anything but won early on as Mary Washington led 1-0 after 4 innings of play.  

The bottom of the 5th inning proved to be the turning point.  Erica Falvery started the rally when she singled to center field.  Stephanie Asselanis doubled bringing home Falvery.  Brandee Adams singled advancing Bireet Chitty to second after she got on with a walk.  Emily Biggs followed with a single then advanced to third base while Adams and Chitty scored.  The final score of the inning came when Emily Nykorchuk reached first base on an error and Briggs scored to give UMW the 6-0 lead.  

The home team added two more in the bottom of the sixth inning taking the 8-0 win.

Mary Washington scored three runs in the first inning of the nightcap and rolled to a 11-0 win.

Mary Baldwin College falls to 0-14 (0-2 USA South) while Mary Washington improves to 8-7 this season.
