SOFTBALL WINS CONFERENCE GAME!

STAUNTON, VA - The Mary Baldwin College softball team took their first USA South South conference win today when they defeated William Peace 6-4.

The Fighting Squirrels took an early lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning when Jonquil Brown hit her first home run of the season.  The Pacers then tied the game in the top of the 3rd inning when Lauren Martin scored on a wild pitch. 

In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Virginia Griffin singled to the shortstop then advanced to second base on a passed ball.  Sara Seekins then hit a double bringing Griffin home.  Seekins then advanced to third, then home, on two passed balls giving MBC a 3-1 lead.

After both teams were held scoreless in the 4th inning, the Pacers found themselves with the bases loaded but with two outs in the 5th inning.  Peace scored when Morgan Bryant walked bringing home Caroline Womble.  They added two runs when Lindsey Haver singled to left field then advanced to second on the throw.  Mary Baldwin got out of the inning with no more damage but were now trailing 3-4.

But, this game was meant for Mary Baldwin, as the team simply refused to lose.  In the bottom of the 5th inning with two outs, Janie Brothers singled to left center field.  Rebecca Parramore then doubled to left field advancing Brothers to third base.  Brothers then scored on a wild pitch advancing Parramore to third.  After reaching first, Jessica Hogle then advanced to second on a passed ball.  An error by the visitors put Jonquil Brown on first, advanced Hogle and brought Parramore home.  After a pitching change, Brown advanced to second on a passed ball and Hogle scored giving Mary Baldwin the 6-4 lead. 

Senior pitcher Jessica Hogle and her teammates held the Pacers scoreless in the final two innings and gave Head Coach Christy Shelton her first USA South Conference win.

In the second game, the visitors came roaring back defeating Mary Baldwin 17-1.

Mary Baldwin College improves to 1-15 (1- 3 USAS) while William Peace falls to 3-20 (2-6 USAS).

Mary Baldwin will host Averett University on Wednesday.  The first game begins at 3:00pm.
