Box Score 2 STAUNTON, VA - Averett University improved to 11-11 this
afternoon defeating Mary Baldwin College 7-3 in game 1 and 9-2 in
the final game of the afternoon.
The Cougars attacked early in the first game of the afternoon
scoring six of their seven runs in the first inning and adding
their final run in the second.
Mary Baldwin took longer to get warmed up finding their offense
in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jonquil Brown started the
home team off with a double to center field, then pitcher Jessica
Hogle added another double to left field. After Taylor
Patterson gave MBC their first out, Lindsey Shifflett singled to
center field and advanced on the throw to second base. Hogle
advanced to third and Brown scored. Griffin then walked and,
with the bases loaded, Averett brought back their starting
pitcher.
On the next play, Griffin and Shifflett advanced while Hogle
scored when Sara Seekins was thrown out at first. Shifflet
then came home on a passed ball and Griffin advanced to third.
Mary Baldwin's streak ended when Olivia Compton was out at
first base.
Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the game
giving Averett the 7-3 win.
Freshman Olivia Compton pitched her best game of the season in
game 2, but it wasn't enough to stop the Cougars from scoring.
The visitors scored consistently crossing the plate twice in
each of the first four innings.
The Fighting Squirrels scored two runs in the first inning when
Griffin singled to first base. Seekins walked advancing her
to second. Compton singled to left field advancing both
Seekins and Griffin. Griffin then crossed the plate when Brothers
flied out to left field. Brown hit her second double of the
day bringing Seekins home to tie the game at 2-2.
Mary Baldwin struggled offensively the remainder of the day
getting only two hits in the final six innings giving Averett the
9-2 victory.
Mary Baldwin College falls to 1-17 (1- 5 USAS). They are
scheduled to go on the road this weekend playing Piedmont College
and LaGrange College both members of the USA South Conference.
