Averett Sweeps MBC Softball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

STAUNTON, VA - Averett University improved to 11-11 this afternoon defeating Mary Baldwin College 7-3 in game 1 and 9-2 in the final game of the afternoon.

The Cougars attacked early in the first game of the afternoon scoring six of their seven runs in the first inning and adding their final run in the second.

Mary Baldwin took longer to get warmed up finding their offense in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Jonquil Brown started the home team off with a double to center field, then pitcher Jessica Hogle added another double to left field.  After Taylor Patterson gave MBC their first out, Lindsey Shifflett singled to center field and advanced on the throw to second base.  Hogle advanced to third and Brown scored.  Griffin then walked and, with the bases loaded, Averett brought back their starting pitcher.

On the next play, Griffin and Shifflett advanced while Hogle scored when Sara Seekins was thrown out at first.  Shifflet then came home on a passed ball and Griffin advanced to third.  Mary Baldwin's streak ended when Olivia Compton was out at first base.

Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the game giving Averett the 7-3 win.

Freshman Olivia Compton pitched her best game of the season in game 2, but it wasn't enough to stop the Cougars from scoring.  The visitors scored consistently crossing the plate twice in each of the first four innings.

The Fighting Squirrels scored two runs in the first inning when Griffin singled to first base.  Seekins walked advancing her to second.  Compton singled to left field advancing both Seekins and Griffin. Griffin then crossed the plate when Brothers flied out to left field.  Brown hit her second double of the day bringing Seekins home to tie the game at 2-2.

Mary Baldwin struggled offensively the remainder of the day getting only two hits in the final six innings giving Averett the 9-2 victory.

Mary Baldwin College falls to 1-17 (1- 5 USAS).  They are scheduled to go on the road this weekend playing Piedmont College and LaGrange College both members of the USA South Conference.
