Softball Defeated on the Road

The Mary Baldwin College softball team fell to 1-21 (1-9 USAS) this weekend when they lost to both Piedmont College and LaGrange College on the road.

The Fighting Squirrels lost the first game on Saturday against Piedmont College 8-0 (five innings.) The Lions took an early 1-0 lead when lead-off batter Megan McClain started the home team off with a triple then scored when Olivia Duncan grounded out to the shortstop.

The Lions added three runs in the third and four in the fifth inning to take the first game of the day 8-0.  Brittney Head, who pitched all five innings, gave up just one hit for the Lions.

After both teams were held scoreless in the first inning of Game 2, the Lions took a decisive 4-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning.  

The home team added one more run in the 3rd inning before the Fighting Squirrels got on the board in the 4th inning.

After Olivia Compton was walked, Janie Brothers reached first base after an error by the shortstop. Rebecca Parramore then singled advancing the runners.  Next, Jonquil Brown stepped to the plate and singled, bringing home Compton.  Nicole Wenthe reached on a fielder's choice and Brothers scored. Patterson then brought Parramore home for MBC's third run of the inning.

With the score 6-3, Piedmont added 4 runs in the 5th inning taking the final game 10-3.

Mary Baldwin College fell to 1-19 while Piedmont improved to 21-3 this season.

On Sunday, Mary Baldwin College fell to LaGrange College 9-1 and 11-3.  

In the first game, LaGrange jumped to early lead scoring six runs in the first inning and rolling to the 9-1 win.

MBC's only run came in the second inning when Jonquil Brown crossed home plate when Tassany Forero singled to right field bringing her home.

In the final game of the weekend, Mary Baldwin jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning.  Ginny Griffin got on base after being hit by a pitch then came home on an error after Sarah Seekins hit a single into left center field.

Olivia Compton was up next and was out on a throw from second to first.  Seekins advanced to third then scored when Rebecca Parramore doubled to left field.

Mary Baldwin's offense stalled after the first inning but the Panthers rolled scoring 2 runs in the 2nd inning then took the lead in the 4th inning adding 5 more runs.  The home team added 4 insurance runs in the 5th and 6th inning taking the 11-3 win.

Mary Baldwin was held to 2 hits while LaGrange finished with 17.

Mary Baldwin College falls to 1-21 while LaGrange improves to 11-11.

The Fighting Squirrels are scheduled to host Methodist University this Wednesday at home.  Please check the website for any changes to the schedule.
