Box Score 2 STAUNTON, VA - The Mary Baldwin College softball team split a
double-header today against Sweet Briar College.
The Fighting Squirrels jumped out to a 5-1 lead in Game 1 behind
lead-off batter Kayla Wheeler who had 3 hits, 2 runs and 3 RBI's.
In the top of the 5th inning with the score 5-2, the Vixens
started their comeback scoring three runs off of three singles.
After Megan Thompson walked, Amanda Terry singled to right center
field advancing Thompson to third. Nene Jones then singled to
the shortstop scoring Thompson. Kayla Dooms' single loaded
the bases. Sweet Briar's final two runs came off of an error
on a throw by the third baseman. The damage could have been
worse as the visitors left three runners on base.
In the 6th inning with the game tied, Sweet Briar picked up
where they left off when Megan Thompson tripled to right field
scoring Loralel Whittaker who had walked. After walking Terry, Nene
Jones flied out to center field earning an RBI and giving the
Vixens the two-run lead.
Both teams were held scoreless in the final inning and Sweet
Briar took the 7-5 win.
In the second game, Mary Baldwin jumped out to a 3-0 lead then
watched their lead disappear when Sweet Briar answered with three
runs at the top of the 3rd inning.
In the bottom of the 4th inning, Olivia Compton started Mary
Baldwin with a double down the left field line. After Lindsey
Shifflet walked, Kayla Wheeler was thrown out at first but advanced
the runners.
After Mary Baldwin scored two runs off of errors by the
visitors, Kristen Anderson doubled down the left field line to
bring two more runners home giving Mary Baldwin the 7-3 lead.
Mary Baldwin did not want a repeat of Game 1 and scored two
final runs in the 5th inning when Lindsey Shifflet homered driving
Morgan Tully home after hitting a double.
Again, both teams were held scoreless in the 6th inning and the
home team gave up just one run in the 7th to hold on to the 9-4
win.
Lindsey Shifflet finished the final game with 3 runs, 2 hits,
and 3 RBI's.
Mary Baldwin College (3-19) moved their weekend games back
due to the weather forecast. They play N.C. Wesleyan College
Sunday afternoon starting at 2:00PM then host Maine - Presque Isle
Monday afternoon.
