Box Score 2 STAUNTON, VA - The Mary Baldwin College softball team hosted Guilford College in their first matchup at home this season.
The Quakers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
The Fighting Squirrels answered with two runs. Kayla Wheeler started the home team off with a single to left center field. Chrissy Cromer then walked. The two runners then stole second and third base respectively. Next, Kristen Anderson singled to right field bringing Wheeler home and advancing Cromer to third base. Morgan Tully then doubled to center field advancing Anderson to third and bringing Cromer across the plate for MBC's final run of the inning.
Guilford added two more runs in the second but it was Mary Baldwin who took the lead in the bottom of the inning.
Lindsey Shifflett started with a single to right field. Next up was Pattie Pleasants who reached first on a fielder's choice while Shifflett advanced to third on an errror. Wheeler then stepped to the plate and hit a double to center field to bring Shifflett home. Cromer then added another double but this time to left field scoring Wheeler.
Guilford then made a change at the plate substituting Ashley Boteler for starting pitcher Rebekah Langston.
With the score tied at 5-5, Morgan Tully singled to right center to bring Cromer across the plate and give Mary Baldwin the lead. The Fighting Squirrels added a final run when Olivia Compton singled bringing Tully home and giving Mary Baldwin a 7-5 lead.
But, the pitching change proved to be the right decision as Mary Baldwin was held scoreless for the remainder of the game while Guilford would take back the lead in the fourth inning when Caroline Barnette scored on a passed ball. Guildford added two more in the top of the fourth to take a 10-7 lead.
The visitors would add two more runs in the fifth and one final score in the seventh inning to take the first game13-7.
Both Kayla Wheeler and Morgan Tully went 2-for-4 at the plate while Cromer finished with two hits, two runs, and two RBI's. Tully also added two RBI's.
In the final game of the day, Mary Baldwin struggled offensively while Guilford jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. The Quakers added one run in the third and two in the fifth to take a comfortable 5-0 win.
Mary Baldwin College 0-4 (0-2 USAS) will host Eastern Mennonite University tomorrow afternoon. The first game begins at 3:00 PM.
