Box Score 2 LAGRANGE, GA - The Mary Baldwin College softball team got their first win of the season this afternoon taking Game 1 in the double header against LaGrange College 7-6.
LaGrange took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when Alison Jiles doubled to left center scoring Dani Gravett and Kalin Oglesby.
The Fighting Squirrels came back in the second inning. After Jonquil Brown got a walk, Montana Welcher singled to left field advancing Brown. Olivia Compton also walked loading the bases. Lindsey Shifflett then walked scoring Brown.
LaGrange then made a change and moved Olivia Wolfe to the mound. After, striking out Sarah Seekins, Kayla Wheeler was hit by a pitch scoring Welcher. Next, Chrissy Cromer struck out but Mary Baldwin still had the bases loaded with only two outs.
Next up was Kristen Anderson who singled to left field and gave Mary Baldwin their third run of the inning and the 3-2 lead.
LaGrange answered at the bottom of the inning with one run to tie the game at 3-3.
Mary Baldwin took the lead back in the top of the third 4-3 only to watch the Panthers tie the game again in the bottom of the 4th.
In the top of the 6th inning, with Jonquil Brown and Montana Welcher on base, Lindsey Shifflett stepped to the plate and hit her first home run of the season giving Mary Baldwin the 7-4 lead.
LaGrange answered again with two runs in the bottom of the inning to trail by one run.
In the top of the 7th inning, Mary Baldwin was held scoreless.
With a 7-6 lead, Coach Christy Shelton put in freshman pitcher Kate Dickinson to finish the game. Dickinson, along with a great defensive effort held the home team scoreless to take their first win of the year.
Pitcher Olivia Compton, who faced 36 batters in the game, gets the win while Dickinson gets the save.
Freshman Montana Welcher finishes the game with 3 hits and 3 runs while senior Lindsey Shifflett tallied 2 hits, 1 run, and 3 RBI's in the win.
Head Coach Christy Shelton said after the win, "I am extremely proud of our team and the way we fought. We stayed focus on what we needed to do throughout the game. We had some timely key hits and made the defensive plays when we needed to. Our pitchers did a great job of giving us the opportunities to make the plays. It will be exciting to see what is in store for us as we keep playing."
In the final game of the evening, the teams found themselves again tied at 1-1 after the 1st inning.
In the 2nd inning, Kayla Wheeler homered bringing home Pattie Pleasants to take a 3-1 lead.
LaGrange then blew the game open with 5 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning and 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning as they rolled to an 11-3 win.
Mary Baldwin College 1-7 (1-3 USAS) finish the weekend road trip Sunday with a double header at Huntingdon College.
