Box Score 2 Ferrum, VA - Ferrum College took both games of a USA South Conference double-header against Mary Baldwin College this afternoon. The Panthers won the first game 10-2 then squeezed out a win in the final game of the day 4-0.
In the first game, Mary Baldwin jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Kayla Wheeler started the Fighting Squirrels off with a double to left field. Chrissy Cromer then singled advancing Wheeler to third. Cromer was then caught stealing at second base. Next up was Kristen Anderson who hit to centerfield. An error by Ferrum put Anderson on and brought Wheeler home. Ferrum then got a second out but Anderson advanced to third base. Montana Welcher singled to centerfield to drive Anderson home and give the Fighting Squirrels a 2-0 lead.
Mary Baldwin held the lead through the third inning when Ferrum could only manage one run in the bottom of the inning to trail 2-1.
Ferrum continued to hold Mary Baldwin scoreless.
In the bottom of the 4th inning, Ferrum took advantage of a string of Mary Baldwin errors to take 8-2 lead.
The Panthers added 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning giving them the 10-2 win in just five innings.
Six different Mary Baldwin players each finished with one hit while Kayla Wheeler and Kristen Anderson scored the two runs for MBC.
In the final game of the day, both teams were held scoreless through the first three innings.
A home run by Amber Coffin in the bottom of the 4th inning gave Ferrum the 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the 5th inning, the Panthers took advantage of some key Mary Baldwin errors to score 3 runs and take a comfortable 4-0 lead.
Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the game.
After the game, Head Coach Christy Shelton said, "We played well in spurts but we need to learn how to make the routine plays defensively to give ourselves a chance. We made too many errors today that gave them opportunities. We didn't hit well overall. We will keep battling and once we figure out how to put it all together, good things will happen."
Mary Baldwin College 1-11 (1-7 USAS) hosts Methodist University on Saturday afternoon and Averett University on Sunday.
