Box Score 2 Staunton, VA – Averett University showed why they are currently ranked 25th in the nation this afternoon when they defeated Mary Baldwin College 13-5 in game 1 and 16-3 in the second game of a double header at Mary Baldwin College.
Leading 1-0 after the first inning, the Cougars' Rhyan Scearce hit a grand slam over the fence in left field in the top of the second inning to give the visitors a commanding 5-0 lead. Later, Taylor Dix singled to right field to drive home Jessica Long to take the 6-0 lead.
Both teams were held scoreless during the 3rd and 4th innings. Averett could manage just one additional run in the top of the 5th inning.
Mary Baldwin got on the board in the bottom of the 6th inning when Kristen Anderson singled to left field bringing home Chrissy Cromer.
Averett answered at the top of the 7th inning with 6 runs.
Kate Dickinson brought Olivia Compton home for the Fighting Squirrels second run of the game. Then, later in the inning with two on, Kayla Wheeler homered over the left field fence giving Mary Baldwin their five run total.
Chrissy Cromer finished with 2 hits for the Fighting Squirrels while Kayla Wheeler totaled 3 RBI's.
In the final game of the day, Averett jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back as they rolled to a 16-3 win.
Lindsey Shifflett led Mary Baldwin with 2 hits and 2 RBI's.
Mary Baldwin College 1-15 (1-11 USAS) will be on the road next week for two non-conference matchups. The Fighting Squirrels face Southern VA on Tuesday and Bridgewater on Thursday.
