Box Score 2 Buena Vista, VA - The Mary Baldwin College softball team improved their record to 3-15 this evening when they defeated Southern VA in a double header 13-3 and 21-3. Both games ended in just five innings.
The Fighting Squirrels got on the board in the first inning when Kayla Wheeler singled then advanced to third on an error. Chrissy Cromer hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Wheeler.
Mary Baldwin added two more runs in the second inning when Olivia Compton doubled bringing home teammate and fellow pitcher Kate Dickinson. Compton scored MBC's final run of the inning when Pattie Pleasants reached on an error bringing home Compton.
Southern VA scored their first run in the bottom of the 2nd inning to trail 1-3.
In the top of the 3rd inning, Mary Baldwin built a commanding lead. After Cromer walked, Kristen Anderson doubled advancing Cromer to third base. Montana Welcher then singled to left field advancing Anderson and scoring Cromer. Later, Olivia Compton hit her second double of the day and tallied 3 RBI's. An error by Southern VA brought Compton home and gave Mary Baldwin a 8-1 lead.
In the top of the 4th inning, Mary Baldwin drove home five more runs. Morgan Tully, Kate Dickinson, and Kayla Wheeler all hit singles.
The Knights answered with two runs at the bottom of the 4th but it was too little too late as the Fighting Squirrels earned the 13-3 win.
Mary Baldwin was led by Olivia Compton who finished with 2 hits, 2 runs, and 4 RBI's. Kate Dickinson added 2 hits, 3 runs, and 1 RBI. Montana Whelcher, Kayla Wheeler, and Morgan Tully all added 2 hits and 1 RBI.
The final game proved to be more of the same as Mary Baldwin jumped out to an early 7-1 lead after the first inning and added 8 runs in the second inning on their way to a 21-3 win.
The Fighting Squirrles were led by Montana Welcher who finished the game with 3 hits, 3 runs, 2 RBI's and 1 HR. Kayla Wheeler added 2 runs, 3 hits, and 3 RBI's while Chrissy Cromer tallied 2 runs, 3 hits, and 3 RBI's. Pattie Pleasants also finished with big numbers adding 2 runs, 2 hits, and 4 RBI's. Morgan Tully and Olivia Compton both hit home runs.
Mary Baldwin College 3-15 (1-11 USAS) travel to Bridgewater on Thursday for another non-conference double header.
