Box Score 2 STAUNTON, VA – The Mary Baldwin College softball team celebrated Senior Day this afternoon. The Fighting Squirrels honored senior softball players Lindsey Shifflett and Jonquil Brown and manager Amanda Johnson. All three have been part of the team for four years. Sierra Trent, who works with Charlie Angersbach, the Athletic Trainer, was also honored for her dedication to the program.
Mary Baldwin College hosted USA South foe Covenant College who spoiled the day taking the first game 9-1 and coming from behind to take the second game 11-6.
The Fighting Squirrels started off sluggish as the Scots jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings. The visitors continued to build their lead adding 2 runs in the 4th inning and a final run in the 5th inning to earn a 9-1 win in just 5 innings. Scot's pitcher Cris Gant allowed just 1 hit in the first game.
In the second game, it was Mary Baldwin who jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings. Kayla Wheeler started the Fighting Squirrels off with a double to left field. Chrissy Cromer followed with a bunt that advanced Wheeler to 3rd base. After Wheeler scored, Morgan Tully hit a sacrifice fly to left field driving home Cromer.
Covenant answered in the top of the 3rd inning when Jordan Brett was driven home after hitting a triple.
With a 2-1 lead and the bases loaded, Morgan Tully stepped to the plate and hit a grand slam home run for Mary Baldwin driving home Jonquil Brown, Kristen Anderson, and Chrissy Cromer.
Down 1-6, Covenant brought in Joni Johnson to pitch who held Mary Baldwin to just four hits for the remainder of the game.
The Scots also got their offense going in the top of the 6th inning when Kasey Hart homered to right center field tallying 3 RBI's.
Down by one, Covenant hit a string of singles that resulted in 3 runs. Then, Jordan Brett added a home run that tallied 3 more RBI's as the Scots finished the inning with 6 runs and 7 hits and took the 11-6 win.
Morgan Tully lead Mary Baldwin with 1 run, 2 hits and 5 RBI's.
Mary Baldwin College 7-29 (1-21 USAS) play their final double header of the season Sunday afternoon at home. The Fighting Squirrels take on Meredith College with the first game starting at noon.
