Offense Drives Greensboro Past Mary Baldwin Softball

Greensboro, NC - Greensboro College swept a USA South double header this afternoon with Mary Baldwin College. 

In the first game, the Pride jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first inning and held on to win 12-9.  Greensboro's Allyson Yeager tripled driving home three runs in the inning.  Later, Madison Crisco doubled tallying 3 RBI's.  The home team finished the inning with 8 hits and 11 runs.

Mary Baldwin added a run in the second inning when Kayla Wheeler hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive home Lindsey Shifflett who had doubled.

Each team added a run in the third inning and both were held scoreless in the 4th inning.

In the top of the 5th inning, Lindsey Shifflett hit a home run and tallied 2 RBI's as Mary Baldwin now trailed 6-12. 

Both teams were again held scoreless in the 6th inning.

With one last chance, Montana Welcher started Mary Baldwin off with a single in the 7th inning.  Then with keen eyes, Olivia Compton and Lindsey Shifflett both walked loading the bases.  Pattie Pleasants then singled driving Welcher home.  A passed ball advanced the runners scoring Compton.  Kayla Wheeler was then hit by a pitch and Sarah Seekins walked scoring Shifflett. 

Mary Baldwin's rally ended when Kristen Anderson flied out to left field and Morgan Tully grounded out to the short stop.  Greensboro gladly walked away with the 12-9 win.

Senior Lindsey Shifflett finished the game with 3 hits, 3 runs and 2 RBI's while Pattie Pleasants added 3 hits and 1 RBI.  Montana Welcher also hit well adding 2 hits, 2 runs, and 1 RBI.

In the second game, Jonquil Brown gave Mary Baldwin their first run in the first inning when she doubled driving home Kayla Wheeler and Sarah Seekings.

Greensoboro quickly answered with 6 runs and 7 hits in the bottom of the first inning.

Mary Baldwin doubled their score to 4 in the top of the second inning when Morgan Tully doubled driving home Seekins and Pleasants.

Greensboro answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning and 3 more runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to take a comfortable 14-4 lead.

The 5th inning was all Mary Baldwin.  With two outs, Jonquil Brown singled.  Jacklyn Lamoy added another single.  Greensboro then walked Compton and Shifflett scoring Brown.  Pleasants then doubled scoring Lamoy, Compton, and Shifflett but was thrown out on the play at 3rd base ending Mary Baldwin's 4 run rally.

The Fighting Squirrels added one more run in the 6th inning but it wasn't enough to catch the Pride as they took the 16-9 win.

Mary Baldwin was led by Jonquil Brown who finished with 3 hits, 1 run, and 2 RBI's and Pattie Pleasants who added 1 run, 2 hits, and 3 RBI's.

Mary Baldwin College 5-21 (1-15 USAS) take on N.C. Wesleyan College tomorrow in North Carolina.  The first game begins at 1:00 PM.
