Box Score 2 STAUNTON, VA - The Mary Baldwin College softball team split with Salem College this afternoon in a non-conference matchup. Salem took the first game 8-1 then fell to the Fighting Squirrels 4-6 in the final game of the afternoon.
In the first game, both teams remained scoreless in the first three innings.
Mary Baldwin then took a 1-0 lead in the 4th inning when Jonquil Brown singled to right field driving home Chrissy Cromer.
Salem answered in the top of the 5th inning scoring 5 runs off of 4 hits.
The Spirits added three more runs in the top of the 7th inning when Crumley homered to left field tallying three RBI's giving Salem the final score of 8-1.
In the second game, Mary Baldwin jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with a string of base hits. After Jonquil Brown walked, Olivia Compton singled to center field advancing Brown. Morgan Tully then singled to load the bases. Lindsey Shifflett, Pattie Pleasants, and Kayla Wheeler all followed with singles. Chrissy Cromer added a sacrifice fly to give Mary Baldwin their 4th run of the inning.
In the third inning, Morgan Tully hit a home run and drove Compton home to give Mary Baldwin the 6-0 lead.
Salem struck back in the top of the 4th inning when Zoe Wade homered and cut Mary Baldwin's lead in half.
In the top of the sixth inning, Wade kept Salem's hopes alive with a double that tallied one RBI. Mary Baldwin's defense then tightened up holding Salem scoreless in the remainder of the inning as Salem's tying runs were left on base.
After holding Mary Baldwin scoreless in the top of the seventh inning, Salem once again threatened Mary Baldwin's lead. With the bases loaded and one out, Olivia Compton struck out Salem's final two batters leaving the go ahead run on base and giving Mary Baldwin the 6-4 win.
Morgan Tully finished the game with 3 hits, 2 runs, and 2 RBI's. Lindsey Shifflett added 2 hits, 1 run, and 1 RBI.
Mary Baldwin College (6-24) travel to Sweet Briar College on Thursday for a non-conference matchup before returning home to finish their conference schedule this weekend.
