Box Score 2 SWEET BRIAR, VA - The Mary Baldwin College softball team traveled to Sweet Briar today for their final matchup with Sweet Briar College. Mary Baldwin won the first game 5-4 in eight innings while the Vixens took the final game 4-8.
Both teams got on the board in the first inning of Game 1. Mary Baldwin's run came when Montana Welcher grounded out to the shortstop bringing Sarah Seekins home.
Both teams were held scoreless in the second, third, and fourth innings.
Mary Baldwin's second run came in the top of the 5th inning. Seekins singled to center field. Chrissy Cromer followed with a double to the center field. Seekins scored off of a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the inning, Tessa Crawford answered with a home run tying the game again.
Morgan Tully then homered in the top of the sixth inning to put the Fighting Squirrles up once again only to be answered by Sweet Briar's Tosha Brown who also hit a home run in the bottom of the inning.
With the game tied at the end of regulation, Chrissy Cromer was placed on second base for Mary Baldwin. Kristen Anderson followed with a home run to give Mary Baldwin 5-3 lead. The Fighting Squirrels then held Sweet Briar to just one run in the bottom of the inning to take the 5-4 win.
Sarah Seekins finished with 2 runs and 2 hits while Anderson added 1 run, 1 hit, and 2 RBI's.
In the second game, Sweet Briar jumped out to a 3-1 lead after four innings.
In the top of the fifth inning, Montana Welcher doubled driving home Chrissy Cromer. Later Morgan Tully walked bringing Kristen Anderson across the plate.
Sweet Briar answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning.
In the top of the 6th inning, Kayla Wheeler homered but that was the only score in the top of the inning and the Fighting Squirrels trailed 4-5.
In the bottom of the inning, Nene Jones homered for Sweet Briar and tallied 3 RBI's to give the home team the 8-4 win.
Kristen Anderson finished with 1 run and 2 hits for Mary Baldwin while Jones finished with 2 runs, 1 hit, and 6 RBI's for Sweet Briar.
Mary Baldwin College (7-25) will have a busy weekend in their final days of play. The Fighting Squirrels host Piedmont College on Friday, Covenant College on Saturday, and Meredith College on Sunday.
