GREENSBORO, NC - The Mary Baldwin College softball team dropped two non-conference games today at Guilford College near Greensboro, NC. 

In the first game, Mary Baldwin gave up just two runs in the first five innings.  Then, in the top of the 6th inning, Mary Baldwin failed to capitalize on several Guilford mistakes and left three runners on base. 

Guilford answered at the bottom of the inning earning 6 hits and scoring 6 runs to take the 8-0 win in six innings. 

Montana Welcher led Mary Baldwin with 2 hits.  Janie Brothers suffered her first loss of the season on the mound.

In the second game, Guilford blew the game open in the 3rd inning after scoring a run in each of the first two.  In the third, Makayla Carver hit a triple and tallied three RBIs after Guilford had already crossed the plate four times earlier in the inning. 

With a 9-0 lead after three innings, Jordan Starke homered in the 4th tallying 2 RBIs to give the Quakers the final score of 11-0 after five innings.

Kate Dickinson held the mound for Mary Baldwin tallying her first loss of the season.

After the game, Head Coach Christy Shelton said, "We learned a lot from these two games that we will continue to build upon.  Offensively, we need to stay more aggressive at the plate and string hits together more consecutively.  Defensively, we need to eliminate our errors and communicate better.  We are better than what we allow ourselves to be and once we figure that out, the potential is limitless."

Mary Baldwin College, 2-2 (0-0 USAS), begins conference play this weekend.  The Fighting Squirrels host NC Wesleyan College on Saturday and William Peace on Sunday.
