Box Score 2 STAUNTON, VA - The Mary Baldwin College softball team improved their record to 8-16 with a sweep of Southern Virginia this afternoon. The Fighting Squirrels won the first game 7-4 and the second 9-3.
In Game 1, Southern Virginia jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the 1st inning. The Knights added a second run in the top of the 3rd inning.
Mary Baldwin got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd inning when three players put together back to back singles. Chrissy Cromer started MBC off when she singled to third base. Sarah Seekins then singled up the middle advancing Cromer. Kayla Wheeler followed with a single to left field driving home Cromer.
The Fighting Squirrels took the lead in the bottom of the 4th inning when Sarah Seekins singled up the middle tallying 2 RBI's.
With a 3-2 lead, Mary Baldwin added two runs in both the bottom of the 5th and 6th innings. The visitors added one run in the 5th and 7th inngs but it wasn't enough as Mary Baldwin took the 7-4 win.
Mary Baldwin was led by Kayla Wheeler and Sarah Seekins who both went 3 for 4 while Montana Welcher and Pattie Pleasants each went 2 for 3 at the plate. Both Seekins and Alli Bascunan tallied 2 RBI's.
In the second game, Mary Baldwin jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first inning and rolled to a 9-3 win. Kayla Wheeler hit her second double of the day going 2 for 4. Janie Brothers, Olivia Compton, and Pattie Pleasants all finished with 2 RBI's.
Olivia Compton took the mound for Mary Baldwin in the first game finishing with 7 strike outs. Janie Brothers, Kate Dickinson, and Kayla Wheeler shared the mound for the Fighting Squirrels in the final game. Brothers tallied 4 strike outs while Wheeler struck out one batter.
Mary Baldwin College (8-16) hosts Piedmont College on Thursday. The first game begins at 2:00pm.
