Box Score 2 DANVILLE, VA – The Mary Baldwin softball team traveled to Averett College on Wednesday to take on the Cougars in the first conference matchup of the season. The Fighting Squirrels lost both games by a score of 6-0 and 2-1.
The Fighting Squirrels move to 3-13 on the season, while Averett improves to 17-6 and 2-0 in conference play.
In Game 1 of the afternoon, the Fighting Squirrels were led by Kayley Turner who went 2-2 in the game and had Mary Baldwin's only two hits.
For Averett, the reigning Fastpitch News Division III Player of the Week, Hannah Thompson got the win in the circle for a complete game shutout going 7.0 innings tallying double-digit strikeouts with 12 and only allowing two hits. Both Kaitlyn Aherron and Nicole Cauthen had two RBI in the game with each scoring one run a piece.
In Game 2 of the afternoon, the Fighting Squirrels dropped a close game 2-1. Turner continued her hot streak, adding a two more hits and the only RBI of the day for the Fighting Squirrels. Sam Breeden and Jordan Miller each added a hit.
In the bottom of the first inning Averett opened up the scoring with a double by Thompson scoring Aherron who reached base with a leadoff single and stole second. In the third inning, the Cougars would score the go ahead run on a double steal when Thompson stole second and Aherron stole home.
Mary Baldwin will return to action on March 23, for a conference matchup at home against Methodist set to begin at 1 pm.
