Mary Baldwin Softball Splits with Methodist

STAUNTON, VA – The Mary Baldwin softball team split both games in the first home conference matchup of the season against Methodist. Winning the first game 15-7 (6 Inn.), and the second game 9-0 (5 Inn.) on Saturday afternoon.

The Fighting Squirrels move to 4-14 overall, while the Monarchs move to 8-16 on the season.

In Game 1 of the afternoon, Courtney Back started the scoring effort in the second inning with a two-run homer, 2-0. Kendall Field would continue the rally with a single and then Lindsay Simmons blasted the second home run of the inning for the Fighting Squirrels, 4-0.

The Monarchs answered with a two-run homer in the third inning by Samantha Jacobs, scoring Carleigh Haywood. The home run streak continued into the fourth inning with a two-run bomb by Jordyn Propst, 4-4.

Mary Baldwin continued the home run streak with another two-run blast, the third from the Fighting Squirrels and second on the day from Back, 6-4. Madison Cash laced a RBI single and Sam Breeden walked to bring in two more runs, 8-4.

Methodist started the fifth inning with five straight singles scoring three runs with one RBI from Kelsey Smith and two RBI from Ashley Benge, 8-7.

In the fifth inning Mary Baldwin scored five runs off of three singles, Miller led the scoring with a two-run single, 13-7. The Fighting Squirrels run-ruled the Monarchs in the sixth inning when Cash singled to cap the three-run sixth inning.

In Game 2 of the afternoon, Methodist was led by Bethany Junker who went 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored and Propst who went 2-4 with a two-run homer and a run scored. Cameron Liso pitched a complete game shutout (5 Inn.), allowing only three hits.

Mary Baldwin will return to action tomorrow, March 24, for a conference matchup against Pfeiffer set to begin at 12 pm.
