The Mary Baldwin University softball team fell twice in a doubleheader at Meredith on Saturday.  

Game 1: Meredith 8, Mary Baldwin 0  (5 innings)

MBU (1-9, 0-3 USA South) had its best scoring chance in the first inning. After Marybeth Strickler walked, Samantha Grimsley hit a double to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Meredith would retire MBU's next two batters, leaving them unable to capitalize.

In the second, a pair of RBI singles by Suzanne Taylor and Alyssa Drake gave Meredith (3-7, 3-1 USA South) a 2-0 lead.

The very next inning, the Avenging Angles put up six runs with an RBI single by Fallon Wimberly, two-RBI double by Savannah Talley and an RBI double by Tatum Smith. Taylor then back to the plate and hit a two-run homerun to make it 8-0.

Game 2: Meredith 12, Mary Baldwin 6

In game two Meredith got on the board early, as Wimberly grounded out to shortstop but was able to score Drake from third.

In the third an RBI single by Lindsay Simmons and a two-RBI single by Grimsley a few batters later,  put MBU ahead.  Alana Gill then scored on a passed ball to make it 4-1.

The very next inning, Meredith answered back with five runs of their own. An RBI single by Smith, two-RBI single by Drake and another RBI single by Sarah Manis put the Avenging Angles back up 5-4. Madison Hamilton topped the inning off with a sacrifice fly.

In the fifth, Grimsley singled again to cut the lead back to one.

Meredith then took control, putting up another five runs in the bottom of the fifth and one more in the sixth.

With two outs in the seventh, Grimsley hit an RBI double for MBU's last run of the game.

The Fighting Squirrels will take the field again on March 23 as they travel to Bridgewater.
