Box Score STAUNTON, Va.- Mary Baldwin picked up its first win of the season Sunday afternoon as the Fighting Squirrels rolled past Washington College 11-5.
The Shoreman jumped to an early lead with two runs in the top of the 2nd on a twp-run double outfielder Chase Ruppel.
Mary Baldwin quickly responded by taking the lead with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, putting together a two-out rally. A Ty Webster single brought in Dylan Rankin before junior Brady Ward tripled, scoring Webster and Blake French o put the Squirrels on ntop 3-2.
Great pitching kept things quiet until the bottom of the six when the Squirrels scored six runs off five singles, three Washington errors and two walks. Webster, Rankin, Tucker Hensley, Noah Kessler, Michael Barber, and Ward all had RBIs for the Squirrels.
The Shoreman responded in the top of the seventh with a two-run homer by infielder Erik Risnychok, making it a 9-4 ballgame. Washington scored again in the top of the eighth, but the Squirrels aswered with two runs , one coming on an RBI double from French that drove in Colby Cheatham. Webster scored when Ward singled and a throwing error on the play allowed Webster to touch the plate for the final 11-5 margin.
Starting pitcher Tucker Hensley kept the lead with six innings on the mound. Hensley allowed two runs while scattering three hits. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
Barber and Ward each tallied three hits on the day for the Squirrels. Ward had three RBIs.
MBU is back in action Tuesday (Feb. 21) when the team travels to Eastern Mennonite to play at 3:00 pm in non-conference action.
