Box Score 2 STAUNTON, Va. - Mary Baldwin softball hosted Brevard College, winning the first game 4-1 and the second 4-2.
In the first game, Mary Baldwin jumped out to an early lead in the first after a Trinity Thomas single was followed by an Olivia Gange sac bunt and an Allison Crum walk. An RBI single to center by Hadley May scored Thomas for a 1-0 lead. The Squirrels struck again in the third inning when a Gange leadoff single was followed by a Crum single and a May walk to load the bases. Haley Roberts singled to plate one run and Emily Hall followed with a walk to force home another runn for a 3-0 MBU lead. The Tornados answered in the top of the fifth with a run, but the Squirrels answered in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run by May to give the final score 4-1.
For MBU, junior pitcher Emily McCreery threw a complete game and held the Tornados to just three hits and one run while also tallying a season-high in strikeouts with 12.
In the second game of the day, Mary Baldwin struck early with a run in the bottom of the first. Trinity Thomas walked and was followed by Gange who reached on a fielder's choice. May then singled to put Gange in scoring position and she scored on a Crum single. The Tornados answered in the second inning to tie the score and had bases loaded with only one out in the fourth. Holly Thompson came in relief to get the Squirrels out of the inning and held the game tied until the seventh when Brevard took the lead with a run.
Thomas and Gagne opened the bottom of the seventh inning with singles to start the winning rally. With one out, Crum belted a three-run walk-off homer, giving MBU the victory.
Molly Thompson pitched 3.2 innings, allowing just two hits and one unearned run, while striking out three.
MBU is back in action Saturday when the team hosts Pfeiffer in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
