Box Score 2 LYNCHBURG, Va. - Mary Baldwin softball went on the road Wednesday and took on Randolph College, winning the first game 9-4 and losing the second 2-1.
In the first game, Randolph jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first inning but the Squirrels responded with a barrage of all nine of their runs in the top of the second .A lead-off double by Hadley May followed by an Allison Crum walk was followed by a Haley Roberts double to score May. Another walk, this time to Emily McCreery loaded the bases. Trinity Thomas singled and Leanna Rankin was hit by a pitch as two more runs crossed the plate. Olivia Gange walked to force in another run, giving MBU a 4-3 lead. The WildCats went to their bullpen; however, the Squirrels kept the line moving as a Sam Grimsley single brought in Thomas, and a triple by May scored three runs for an 8-3 lead. May scored on a sacrifice fly by Sam Charles, naking the score 9-3.
Squirrels pitcher Emily McCreery pitched a complete game, finishing with seven strikeouts. She allowed three earned runs in seven innings.
In the second game, it was a pitcher's duel between MBU's Molly Thompson and WildCat pitcher Olesia Walch as both pitchers threw a complete game.
Randolph took a 1-0 lead in athe first, but MBU evened the score with a run in the fifth. Akkison Crum delivered a pinch-hit single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Crum scored on a single by Olivia Gange to tie the game at 1-1. The Wildcats scored again in the bottom of the fifth inning and held on for the 2-1 win.
Tnompson held the WildCats to just five hits.
For MBU, May went 4-for-7 on the day with three doubles, a triple and three RBIs.
MBU is back in action Saturday (March. 11) when the team hosts its first home games of the season against Mary Washington. The DH begins at 12 noon.
