Squirrels Shut Out Sweet Briar

SWEET BRIAT, Va. -  Mary Baldwin pitched a pair of shutouts Tuesday in non-conference softball action at Sweet Briar, winning the first game 6-0 and the second game 7-0.  MBU extended its win streak to four games, tying for the longest run since an eight-game win streak in the 2006 campaign.
 
In the opener, the Squirrels started out strong early with a run in the first. Leanna Rankin led off with a single and stole second. Olivia Gange moved Rankin to third with a single before Allison Crum plated the run with a groundout.
 
The Squirrels scored again in the second inning. Trinity Thomas doubled and moved to third on a bunt by Reagn Frazier. Thomas scored on a Paige Fix groundout and Rankin doubled home another run for a 3-0 MBU lead.

In the third inning, the offense continued to flourish as a Haley Roberts' single was followed by a Hadley May's RBI-double, making the score 4-0.  The Squirrels finished off their scoring in the seventh when Rankin reached on an error and Olivia Gagne followed with a single. Rankin scored on a double steal and Gagne scored on May's double for the final 6-0 margin.

MBU pitcher Emily McCreery threw a complete game and allowed just five hits and one walk while tallying four strikeouts.

In the second game of the day the Squirrels started off slow until the offense exploded in the third inning with six runs. Fix singled and scored on Gagne's double to out the Squirrels on the board. Gagne then scored on a double by Crum to make it 2-0. A single by Sam Charles put runners on the corners before a double by May pushed the lead to 3-0. Trinity Thomas singled home a run and Emily Hall chased home two runs with a triple to put MBU in top 6-0.

MBU scored its final run nin the fifth when Charles singled and scored on a double by May.

MBU pitches Morgan Hughes, Molly Thompson, and Reagan Fraizer combined to keep Sweet Briat scoreless, allowing just four hits in the second game.

For the Squirrels, May went 5-for-7 on the day with four RBIs and Gagnewent 5-for-8 at the plate.
