Box Score 2 BUENA VISTA, V.a, - Mary Baldwin split its softball doubleheader Saturday at Southern Virginia, winning the opener 5-2 before losing the second game 5-3.
In the first game the Knights struck first with a run in the bottom of the first before the Squirrels scored two in the third inning.
Reagan Frazier led off with a single but then was forced out at second on
Paige Fix's bunt attempt. A groundout from
Leanna Rankin pushed Fix to second before
Olivia Gagne singled up the middle to score FIx. Gagne advanced to second on the throw home and then scored on
Allison Crum's single for a 2-1 MBU lead.
MBU scored again in the sixth as Gagne opened the inning with a single through the left side and Crum followed up with a single.
Haley Roberts reached first on a throwing error from the SVU pitcher, allowing both Gagne and Crum to score, giving MBU a 4-1 lead.
The Squirrels scored their final run in the top of the seventh when
Leanna Rankin reached on a bunt single and moved to second on Gagne's groundout. Rankin scored on Crum's double, making the score 5-1.
Crum was 3-for-4 with two RBIs in Game 1 while Gagne and
Trinity Thomas each finished with two base hits.
Emily McCreery went the distance in the circle, allowing two earned runs on eight hits.
In the second game of the day, the Knights took the lead with three runs in the second and kept the Squirrels scoreless until the fifth inning SVU stretched its lead to 5-1 and then held off a Squirrels rally in the seventh to earn the split.
With the split, MBU is assured of a winning record on the season as the Squirrels are now 18-15-1 overall. The team concludes regualar-season play with a 10-8 conference record.
Mary Baldwin will be the sixth seed in the upcoming conference tournament and will play next weekend at Greensboro College.
