Box Score Offensive production emerged from nearly every player in the lineup as Mary Baldwin scored 23 runs in two games on 28 hits, eight walks and nine Bluefield errors, but one costly inning denied the Fighting Squirrels a non-conference doubleheader sweep Friday.
Bluefield (3-3) erased a 5-0 first-inning deficit with eight runs on six hits and two MBU errors on the way to a 10-8 victory in the opener. The Fighting Squirrels (2-4) weren't to be denied in the nightcap, expanding a 4-2 lead with 11 runs in the last two innings on the way to a 15-5 decision in six innings. Â
Mary Baldwin opened the twinbill with five runs in the top of the first, highlighted by homers by Alison Crum and
Hadley May. After the hosts rebounded in the bottom of the first, MBU challenged with single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings, but were unable to gain the equalizer. Â
Trinity Thomas and
Jenna Dimiceli each finished with two hits and two runs produced while Crum had two RBI and a run scored.
In the nightcap, MBU built a 4-2 lead then put the game away in the last two innings.Â
Emily Hall ripped a two-run homer and
Rachel Thompson had a two-run double during a seven-run fifth inning. Bluefield scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth, extending the game into the sixth, where Crum's two-run double to right spearheaded a three-run outburst and help the Fighting Squirrels finish the game in six innings.
Leanna Rankin led the attack with four hits, a walk, three runs and an RBI. Crum was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI while Thompson finished 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBI. Â
Molly Thompson and
Allie Hurt each added two safeties and
McKenzie Tillman joined the hit parade with a two-run round tripper in the third inning.
Thompson went the distance, allowing five earned runs on six hits to pick up her second win of the season.
MBU will drive up I-81 three times this week for non-conference doubleheaders at Shenandoah (3/12, 2 p.m.), Eastern Mennonite (3/14, 3 p.m.) and Bridgewater (3/17, 1 p.m.).
