Box Score 2 Mary Baldwin scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning of the first game on the way to a 9-3 non-conference softball victory over Bridgewater Tuesday that was the Fighting Squirrels' first win against the Eagles in six years. BU bounced back in the second game with nine runs in the top of the first on the way to a 13-2 win.
The doubleheader split, featuring MBU's first win over BC since a 2-1 decision since 2019, lifted the Fighting Squirrels' overall record to 12-6, the best record after 18 games in team history. Previously, Mary Baldwin boasted an 11-6 record midway through the 2004 season was the best start in team history. MBU lost a handful of games after that on the way to finishing with a 22-19 final record - the most wins in team history and one of only two times the Fighting Squirrels have reached the 20-win plateau.
In Wednesday's opener, MBU scored eight runs on four hits, three walks and a Bridgewater error to take early control. May drilled her seventh homer of the season, a three-run shot, while Kendal Swatala smacked a three-run double to highlight the outburst. Starting pitcher Emily McCreary went six innings, allowing just two runs, to earn the victory.
In the nightcap, Bridgewater exploded with two home runs in the first inning on the way to a 9-0 lead. May provided MBU's runs on another two-run blast in the fourth inning, raising her career total to 33 round trippers.
Leanna Rankin and May each had two of MBU's 10 hits in the twinbill.
The Fighting Squirrels open their 2025 USA South schedule Saturday at home when Methodist visits Staunton for a doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m.
