Box Score 2 Mary Baldwin struggled offensively in the opener, but bounced back in the nightcap with an 8-0 win, the team's second shutout victory of the week, in a USA South Conference softball doubleheader against visiting Methodist University.
Pitcher Brittany Jones and the Monarchs' defense stifled the Fighting Squirrels in Game 1, scattering just four hits on the way to a 7-0 win. Catcher Sam Breeden had a pair of singles to lead MBU.
In the nightcap, the hosts scored a single run in the first, followed by an explosive five-run second inning. Left fielder Lindsay Simmons was one of four Fighting Squirrels with a multi-hit game. Simmons had three hits, two runs scored and two RBI to lead the MBU attack.
Freshman shortstop Olivia Gagne highlighted the team's third win of the week and fourth victory of the season with her first lifetime home run among her two-hit, two-run performance. Sam Spradlin and Lacey Pugh also had two safeties in the Fighting Squirrels' 11-hit game.
Lefty Morgan Hughes was the recipient of the offensive barrage to gain her second win of the week. Hughes surrendered four hits and two walks over five innings while fanning four to improve to 2-3 for the season.
MBU returns to action Tuesday, April 6, with a non-conference twinbill at Wilson College. The team returns to conference play Saturday with two games at Averett.
